12th International Symposium on Electronic Art <15 - 22 August>
ISEA, The Inter-Society for the Electronic Arts is an international organization founded in the Netherlands in 1990. It is organizing the event once in two years. This year, in 2004, it was held in Finland and Estonia, also on the ferry which cruised on the Baltic Sea. This is a short report of the event including Machida's performance.

The event started from the ferry. Many participants and tourists went on board. The ferry has 10 floors with some elevators. The inside is like one of big building.

Ticket counter for the ferry. The ferry departed from Helsinki for Tallinn. People had big luggages, so the waiting room was crowded. All people were opening their laptops on the table in the bar during waiting time.

The view from the top of the ferry. Some of the events were held on the ferry. It takes 2 hours by ship from Helsinki to Tallinn, very close. But the ferry cruised along the shore in Finland and Sweden for 3 days. People could enjoy the beautiful scenary from the ferry and participants' works in neutral area.

Machida played at Riviera pool, 9th floor on the ferry. It is a space for enjoying swimming in the pool and relaxing with some drinks. His steelpan sound was clear and minimal, processed by his program of Max/MSP, Mac based software.

Many summer houses can be seen along shore. Spent very rich time.

Exhibition in Tallinn. There were many venues for exhibiting participants' works in Tallinn. Here, some wearable works with electronic devices were installed. The fashion show was also held in a club in the city.

One of the exhibitions in Tallinn. Not only exhibitions but also many symposiums were held at the time. you can see "isea2004" posters everywhere in this medieval city.

Kiasma, a contemporary art gallery in Helsinki. Very good architecture. It is located in the center of the city. The theme of this exhibition was "Wireless Experience".

Collaboration by Phill Niblock & Katherine Liberovskaya at MUU Gallery. 3 projectors were used in a room. The images of speaking people of several races were screened to 3 walls. The sound of several languages and the processed sound were mixed, so the atmosphere looked like being in flood. Great work.

"Playground", the work of Diego Diaz Garcia & Zona de Recreo at Kiasma. Spanish talented artists. Riding on and shaking the body which has a monitor, the image of virtual scenary in the monitor will be changed. The image also were screened to the wall. You can touch the blocks of touch-panel of the monitor, and go to the anoher dimension. Very enjoyable.

"Path of Illusion", Bundith Phunsombatlert at Kiasma. An artist of Thailand. He made 5 different sized streetlight. But it is unusual. Each pole has keyboards of Alphabet and Thai language at plinth. You can type what you want, and the characters which you typed appear to the part of lamp. Highly complete work.

"sein & zeit", performance by Masayuki Akamatsu at Kiasma. The percussionist played drum and the sound was used as controller for changing channels of TV images. It was very synchronized between sound and images. Well programed.
